Profile

Since October 2011, Ramin Yahyapour is managing director of the Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung Göttingen mbH (GWDG) and a full professor at the Institute of Computer Science at Göttingen University. 

Between March 2007 and September 2011 he was director at the IT and Media Center of the TU Dortmund University and since April 2009 he was professor in Dortmund with a chair in Service Computing at the Faculty of Computer Science. He was also appointed Chief Information Officer of the university. He was with the Computer Engineering Institute at the University Dortmund between 1996 and 2007.

His research interests lie in the area of service computing, distributed computing, and resource management for grid and cloud infrastructures.

Teaching

Current lectures (Winter term 2011/12)

Service Computing

The course is offered during the winter semester and covers the technology stack that is available and used for building eCommerce application as well as Grid infrastructures.

Distributed Systems

The lecture follows the book Distributed Systems. Concepts and Design by George Coulouris, Jean Dollimore, Tim Kindberg. The course is onlyoffered during summer semesters.

Computer Systems

The lecture follows the book Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach by John L. Hennessy, David A. Patterson, David Goldberg. The course is only offered in winter semesters.

Parallel Processing Systems

The course is only offered during the summer semesters. It follows the book by David E. Culler, Jaswinder Pal Singh, Parallel Computer Architecture, A Hardware/Software Approach.

 


Projects


  • SLA@SOI
    SLA@SOI is an Integrated Project (IP) of the EC researching the systematic management of service-oriented infrastructures on the basis of formally specified service level agreements (SLAs). SLA@SOI is an industry driven project starting June 1, 2008. It is a NESSI strategic project realizing one core pillar of the overall NESSI vision.
  • SLA4DGrid
    SLA4DGrid is building a service layer for supporting service-level agreements for the national D-Grid initiative. SLAs are the means to include reliability and policy constraints into resource allocations. They are considered as building block to support business models in Grid infrastructures. Necessary guarantee terms are negotiated and agreed upon prior to resource usage. The project is funded by the German ministry of research (BMBF) with a total budget of 1.5 Mio Euro and runs from 2009 to 2012. The ITMC Dortmund (Dr. Yahyapour) is main contractor and coordinator of this project.
  • SKALB
    The SKALB project (Lattice-Boltzmann-Methoden für skalierbare Multi-Physik-Anwendungen) is funded by the German research ministry (BMBF) for HPC software for novel parallel architectures. The project runs for 3 years and has a total volume of 1,8 Mio Euro. It comprises partners from the universities of TU Braunschweig, Uni Erlangen, Uni Stuttgart as well as the IANUS GmbH. The TU Dortmund part is lead jointly by S. Turek (Mathematics) and R. Yahyapour (ITMC).
  • CoreGrid-WG
    This EU-funded project was a network of excellence comprising 42 partner in European countries with excellent Grid expertise. I am member of the Executive Committee of the project and serving as work package leader for WP6, responsible for the "Institute on Resource Management and Scheduling". While the funded FP7 project ended in August 2008, CoreGRID continues as an ERCIM Working Group to form a sustainable research network.

Former Projects

  • C3-Grid
    This project - funded as part of the German D-Grid initiative - aims at building a production Grid for the German climate-research community. Due to large filesets in different climate data archives, coordinated data and job management are a key issues in this project.
  • HEP-CG
    This project - funded as part of the German D-Grid initiative - aims at extending Grid functionalities for the high-energy physics community. Special interest of the research activity lies in a better coordination of job and data management. To this end, a new workload management service is developed which interacts with enhanced compute and storage management systems like dCache.
