GWDG as data center and IT service provider for the University of Göttingen

The GWDG is a service organization which works in conjunction with the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Society as a data and IT service center. It also carries out independent research in the field of computer science and provides support in preparing future professionals for a career in information technology.

As stated in the original partnership agreement, the GWDG supports scientific research and education by

Particularly, tasks include the operation of high-performance computers, the provision of specialized systems and support of the transmission network GÖNET, which connects institutes in Göttingen. Through the GWDG, GÖNET is connected to the national research and education network X-WiN and the internet.

As an IT competence center, the GWDG advises and supports all associated institutes concerning all questions on scientific data processing.

Data Center

As the data center of the University of Göttingen, the GWDG not only operates systems in use by researchers of the university, but also operates and maintains systems in the scope of cooperations:

Within these different communities, synergies are effectively used. The GöHPC network needs to be explicitely named in this context, as it enables users and providers to exchange information on a regular basis and creates synergies and a bundling of expertise in many different fields.

Service Contacts

For each facultiy of the university, we have a dedicated contact person, which should improve communication with the users. They are available as direct contacts

  • for requirements, suggestions and desires for which no service is yet available,
  • for problems that cannot be solved with technical or organizational measures by the responsible staff of the GWDG,
  • short for all aspects of cooperation between the GWDG and the users of the institutes which cannot be adequately addressed via the direct path of the support request.
