The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) aims to improve the infrastructure for research data in Germany and thus increase the efficiency of the German science system. An important goal of the NFDI is to expand and ensure national data sovereignty. The associated services and subject-specific expertise are developed internally in the consortia, and cross-disciplinary cross-cutting issues are addressed across consortia. Examples include joint modeling of metadata schemas and ontologies, joint infrastructure services and research data management services, legal and ethical issues surrounding the sharing of research data, and the establishment of citation of research data in scientific publications.

The non-profit association National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e.V. coordinates the activities to establish a networked information infrastructure, the development of sustainable interoperable research data management, and in the creation of a reliable range of data-based services for science and research. In addition to networking on a national level, the NFDI is connected to international initiatives such as the European Open Science Cloud and participates in its development.
