Digital Preservations for libraries (DP4lib)
Based on the KOPAL project the project DP4lib is the logical improvement of an integrated service for long-term archiving of digital data. Initially the different usage scenarios of eight academic libraries were evaluated. These results were evaluated for their technical feasibility and implemented in a modular fashion so that the adjusted or newly created services can be seamlessly integrated into the corresponding infrastructure.
- Prototypical build of a flexible infrastructure for long-term archiving
- Technical enhancement of the existing solution based on the partner requirements
- Development of a long-term usable process model and guide for getting started with long-term archiving
- Transition into daily operation
GWDG’s Role in the Project
The GWDG advises the German National Library in Frankfurt a. M. (DNB) on long-term continued operation of the system, capacity planning and works on the improvement of the overall operation with the focus on data security and data management.
With a “proof of concept” together with DNB, IBM and GWDG a system configuration was successfully tested and accepted by the end of 2011. The GWDG operates the system on behalf of the DNB. After successful acceptance tests within the DNB in April 2012 the system is in production usage since July 2013. Early 2017 the formerly proprietary software was replaced by an in-house solution.
Since going live about 45 TB (as of May 2018) of data were archived. Mainly in the context of legal deposit for publishers and part of the DNB service “AREDO”.
The long-term archiving solution of DNB in conjunction with the GWDG has been certified with the following seals:
- Data Seal of Approval, since August 2015
- Nestor Siegel für vertrauenswürdige Digitale Archive, since February 2016
German Research Foundation (DFG). Project duration: 2009-12-01 - 2012-02-29.
Since March 2012 without DFG funding in productive operation funded by the DNB.
At the beginning DP4lib was a joint project with eight German academic libraries involved. The project was coordinated by DNB and Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek (SUB) Göttingen. Since 2012 GWDG and DNB jointly continue the project.
