HPC-Research
The various HPC systems operated by GWDG are also an object of GWDG research on HPC methods, the results of which are then used to improve operation. In this context GWDG is also inolved in various third party projects. GWDG has currently 32 researchers which are mainly externally funded through such projects.
Prof. Ramin Yahyapour is professor for applied computing at the University of Göttingen and director of GWDG. His research group has a strong track record on questions concerning scheduling and resource management for HPC applications. This includes task and job scheduling as well as partitioning problems. In recent years, data-driven computing gained importance at GWDG, e.g. in expanding the applicability of MapReduce algorithms, or in scheduling of Big Data applications with regards to the workload in virtualised clusters. Another more recent topic is increasing programmer productivity by optimising communication patterns within the GASPI specification. He contributed to the HPC scientific community in various forms, e.g. GWDG organised Euro-Par 2019, the prime European conference covering all flavors of parallel and distributed processing.
Prof. Philipp Wieder is leading the GWDG eScience group which also covers research in HPC, e.g. on data analytics infrastructures, communication structures, security in distributed systems, and data management.
In addition, Prof. Yahyapour is founding director of the Göttingen Campus Institute for Data Science (CIDAS) that combines method research in data science, AI / machine learning, and Big Data.
